On a large Constantia or Durbanville plot the constraint is often the estate rules, the boundary, and the roof tying into an existing tile roof. On a Pinelands single-storey the constraint is the street pattern and the existing foundations. On a Plumstead or Bellville house it is often a straightforward extra room if the stand is not already built to the building lines. A Sea Point flat is rarely an extension at all.

No. An estate can add rules. The City of Cape Town still decides on plans.

The side of the house you want to extend, roughly how many metres, and whether there is a sewer, a neighbour’s wall, or a tree in the way.
